  The PhD is attached to an Australian Research Council-funded project entitled "Diagnosing cross-cultural communicative ability in English as a second language to improve language teaching and learning" (Chief Investigators are Carsten Roever and Catherine Elder). The project will develop a test battery to assess second language learners' cross-cultural communication abilities in English from an interlanguage pragmatics perspective. More detail on the project can be found in the project description below.

  The project budget includes funding for a 3-year Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) for a local student. Alternatively, it can cover most of the tuition costs for 3 years for an international student. No further funding is available from this project. International applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS).

Please note that a PhD in Australia involves very little coursework and should be completed within 3 years so applicants are expected to have a well-developed research proposal when embarking on the PhD.

  The successful applicant will have an Honours or Masters degree and a strong background in Applied Linguistics, preferably with a specialization in interlanguage pragmatics and / or second language assessment. Applicants with a background in intercultural communication, second language acquisition, discourse analysis or educational measurement are also welcome to apply.

  Project Description:

  This project will develop and validate a test battery for assessing second language learners' knowledge of cultural norms and practices that influence communication in English, drawing on interlanguage pragmatics. While there are many formal tests to measure learners' general knowledge of another language, only very few instruments measure their cross-cultural communicative ability, and they tend to be designed only for learners from one specific native language background and narrowly focused on one aspect of communication. Administering these tests is also often very costly because they involve one-on-one role plays or interviews, so they are not commonly used in practice. The test to be developed here will be comprehensive but easy and inexpensive to administer, which will allow researchers to systematically document particular problem areas for learners of English for the first time. It will also allow teaching institutions to implement specific training programs to enhance learners' cross-cultural knowledge and consequently their success in cross-cultural communication.
